Got a case of the Baseboard Cleaning Blues?

Baseboards are often neglected when it comes to cleaning. These humble strips of wood or vinyl, often relegated to the shadows, have an importance that transcends their lack of glamour. Today, we’re here to sing their praises and shed some light on why cleaning baseboards is a task that should not be ignored.

Baseboards reside close to ground zero for allergens and dust mites. These little critters love to make baseboards their homes! Keeping your baseboards clean not only makes your home look tidier, but it can also improve the air quality by removing dust and allergens. Additionally, if left uncleaned, the dirt and grime can become more difficult to remove over time, making the task more time-consuming and labor-intensive.

When you’ve put in the effort to clean every other part of your home, neglecting the baseboards is like going to a black-tie event wearing flip-flops! A little cleaning goes a long way in making your home feel complete.

    GATHER YOUR SUPPLIES:
    • Vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment
    • Microfiber cloths
    • Bucket of warm water
    • Cleaning solution. Ryland and Sean Cook, owners of Palmetto Services, suggest the following natural cleaning solution:

    Natural Cleaning Solution

3 cups – Harris Cleaning Vinegar, Lavender Scent
1 tsp – Dawn dish soap
    2 tsp – Baking soda
Combine in a 1 Gallon bucket, then fill the rest of the bucket with distilled water

Benefits: Does a great job, no chemicals
involved, and makes the house smell great!

    THE CLEANING PROCESS:
    • Use the brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner to remove any loose dirt and dust from the baseboards.
    • Dip a microfiber cloth into the cleaning solution and wring out any excess water. You don’t want the cloth to be soaking wet, as this can damage the baseboards.
    • Wipe down the baseboards with the damp cloth, working in small sections at a time. Be sure to wipe from the top of the baseboard down to the bottom to avoid dripping cleaning solution onto the floor.
    • Rinse your cloth frequently in the bucket of warm water and wring out any excess water. Then dip the cloth into your cleaning solution again.
    • Once you have cleaned all of the baseboards, go back over them with a dry microfiber cloth to remove any remaining moisture and prevent water damage.
