It&#8217;s like embarking on a journey into the unknown, where you&#8217;ll discover uncharted territories, strange creatures, and, if you&#8217;re lucky, a few edible relics from the past.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, cleaning out your refrigerator is an important task to keep your food fresh, your fridge running efficiently, and your kitchen hygienic. And what better time to do it than on <strong>November 15<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/nationaltoday.com\/national-clean-out-your-refrigerator-day\/#:~:text=National%20Clean%20Out%20Your%20Fridge%20Day%20%E2%80%93%20November%2015%2C%202023\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Clean Out Your Refrigerator Day.<\/a> Here are some tips on how to reclaim your fridge&#8217;s glory!<\/p>\n<h4>Gather your supplies:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Hot, soapy water (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/foodsafety\/pdfs\/5-steps-to-clean-your-refrigerator.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CDC recommendations<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li>Make a solution of 1 Tablespoon of liquid bleach in 1 gallon of water (to sanitize surfaces &#8211; this step is optional)<\/li>\n<li>Baking soda (for stubborn stains)<\/li>\n<li>Soft cleaning cloths or sponges<\/li>\n<li>Trash bags or compost bin<\/li>\n<li>Towels for drying<\/li>\n<li>A new box of baking soda for odor control (The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.armandhammer.com\/en\/baking-soda\/deodorizers\/fridge-and-freezer-deodorizers\/fridge-n-freezer-odor-absorber-14-oz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ARM &amp; HAMMER\u2122 Fridge-n-Freezer\u2122 Odor Absorber<\/a> works well because it is spill-proof.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Empty the fridge (AKA: Operation Dig Deep)<\/h4>\n<p>You may need a strong stomach and a curious nose for this step of your journey!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Start by taking out all the food and condiments.<\/li>\n<li>Wipe food and drink containers with hot, soapy water, then thoroughly dry them.<\/li>\n<li>Place perishable items in a cooler with ice packs to keep them cold while you clean. (If you don&#8217;t have a cooler, do not leave these items out of the fridge for more than two hours.)<\/li>\n<li>Check expiration dates and discard anything that is past its prime or has gone bad.<\/li>\n<li>Discard the box of baking soda if you were using one to absorb odors.<\/li>\n<li>Remove and wash removable parts (like shelves and drawers) with hot, soapy water in the sink. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foodnetwork.com\/healthyeats\/healthy-tips\/how-to-clean-sanitize-refrigerator\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Let the cold glass shelves or drawers come down to room temperature first.<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Clean the interior:<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Use a soft cloth or sponge and your hot, soapy water to wipe down the interior of the fridge, including the walls and door.<\/li>\n<li>For stubborn stains, make a paste using baking soda and water and gently scrub the area.<\/li>\n<li>Clean the seals and gaskets: Gently clean the rubber seals around the fridge doors using hot soapy water and a soft cloth. Keep raw meats separate from other items, and group like items together.<\/li>\n<li>Use airtight containers or resealable bags to help keep food fresh and prevent odors from spreading. Don&#8217;t forget to label items and put dates on them!<\/li>\n<li>Keep an eye on expiration dates and rotate items so that older products are used first.<\/li>\n<li>Schedule regular cleaning sessions to prevent a major cleanup.
